Veteran Pakistani actor Tauqeer Nasir recently disclosed that Bollywood director Sawan Kumar once approached him for a role in a film adaptation of his play. The revelation came during his appearance on a program aired by New TV, during which he discussed various aspects of his career.
The actor’s admission about Bollywood’s interest in him quickly spread across social media, eliciting a flurry of comments from users. Tauqeer Nasir explained that the proposal didn’t come directly from Sawan Kumar but rather through an intermediary, initially inviting him for tea—a meeting to discuss his potential involvement in the film.
According to Tauqeer Nasir, Sawan Kumar aimed to create a film based on Zangar, a popular play from the 1980s that featured two heroines. The plan included casting Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit as one of the leads. Touqeer Nasir expressed his attraction to the project, particularly the opportunity to co-star with Dixit, but ultimately, circumstances prevented him from pursuing the role.
Tauqeer Nasir recounted that escalating tensions between Pakistan and India at the time made it difficult for him to consider working in India, leading him to decline the offer. He added that he never visited India for film projects after that.
In addition to discussing his nearly-realized Bollywood venture, he claimed that Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan had once emulated a role he played in a drama for Khan’s film Kabhi Al-Wadaa Na Kehna. Despite this, Tauqeer Nasir conveyed his ongoing respect for Khan, noting that he continues to send him greetings.
Tauqeer Nasir’s insights into his career and the cross-border cinematic exchanges highlight the complex and often politically influenced interactions between the film industries of neighbouring countries.
