Islamabad – Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar addressed the media in Islamabad today, asserting that the government remains stable despite the Supreme Court’s recent decision on reserved seats for the Sunni Ittehad Council. The Law Minister emphasized that the government still commands the support of 209 members and is not threatened by the court’s ruling.
During the press conference, Tarar highlighted that the Sunni Ittehad Council initially sought relief concerning specific seats but ultimately, the seats were awarded to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) by the Supreme Court. He reiterated that PTI was not a direct party in the initial case presented at the Peshawar High Court, dismissing any direct claims by PTI in that context.
The Supreme Court’s decision to annul previous rulings by the Peshawar High Court and the Election Commission does not pose a threat to our government, said Azam Nazir Tarar. He stressed the government’s majority and indicated that the constitutional provisions had been revised in line with the court’s decision.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah penned the Supreme Court’s decision which was backed by a 13-member panel led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa. The panel declared the Election Commission’s prior decision unconstitutional, thereby awarding the disputed reserved seats to PTI.
Legal experts have supported the Supreme Court’s decision, deeming it consistent with constitutional and legal standards. The full bench involved in this landmark decision included Justices from across the board, contributing to an 8/5 majority ruling in favor of the judgment.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar also pointed out that any decisions regarding whether to file for a review against the Supreme Court’s ruling would be determined by the federal cabinet. The recent ruling has sparked questions and discussions among legal circles and the general public, reflecting the complexities involved in the interpretation of constitutional law.
The ruling has significant implications for the political landscape, particularly affecting the Sunni Ittehad Council and PTI. However, the Law Minister’s remarks underline a broader confidence in the continuity and stability of the current government amidst legal challenges and political dynamics.
