In a recent TV interview on Neo News, former dancer and actress Deedar spoke openly about the challenges of being in the entertainment industry in Pakistan. She shared that she never planned to join showbiz and wasn’t interested in dancing at first. It was her mother and older sister, Nargis, who encouraged her to start dancing. She worked hard, practicing up to eight hours a day, even though people made fun of her dancing at the start.
Deedar said that even after all her years in the industry, she still doesn’t feel fully accepted or respected. She wishes that society treated performers with more respect, and sometimes she feels she might have been happier as a housewife. She explained that many dancers and actors in Pakistan face the same lack of acceptance, which often makes them feel undervalued. Deedar talked about how weddings in Pakistan often have big dance performances, where women and young girls wear bold dresses and dance with excitement.
However, she finds it unfair that while people enjoy dancing at weddings, many Pakistani men don’t want to marry a dancer. She also compared this to India, saying that in Indian society, music and dance are more accepted and celebrated in daily life. Deedar shared her sadness over how Pakistan’s society views dance and acting. She thinks it may take many years for these art forms to be fully respected in the country.
