The service then begins negotiations with Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. to recover the distribution rights of the film to distribute it on its platform.

Legal problem
Shortly after Netflix acquired the film, it was announced that Arthur Conan Doyle’s rights holders, the Conan Doyle Estate, were attacking the novelist behind the series of novels, Nancy Springer, as well as her publisher. Penguin Random House, for copyright and trademark infringement.
In “The Enola Holmes Investigations”, Sherlock Holmes is presented as warmer and capable of feeling emotions. According to the rights holders, these personality traits were introduced in the works of Arthur Conan Doyle published after 1923, which are not yet in the public domain, unlike those published before this year and which can be used freely.
This version of the character is therefore still protected by copyright and can only be used with permission, which is not the case with the series of novels and its adaptation. Nancy Springer and the production of the film would therefore be breaking the law using this version of Sherlock Holmes. Netflix, Legendary Pictures and the producers of the film adaptation are also targeted in the complaint because they are adapting the Springer novels.
