Shehnaz Sheikh began her acting journey in a unique way. She wasn’t discovered like many others in the industry but was recommended to Haseena Moin for a role in the show Ajnabi by someone. Haseena Moin and Shoaib Mansoor then asked her to audition for a role. She first appeared on TV in 1980 in the drama Balila, written by Shoaib Hashmi. Even though Balila was cancelled after just a few episodes, Shehnaz Sheikh had already made a mark and was chosen for the drama Ankahi, written by Haseena Moin and directed by Syed Mohsin Ali and Shoaib Mansoor. In Ankahi, she played Sana Murad, an ambitious and sensible girl from a middle-class background.

Her next show, Maray Thay Jin K Liye, was well-received and praised for playing a modern yet traditional woman. Following Ankahi, she worked with Haseena Moin again in Tanhaiyaan, directed by Shahzad Kalil, which became a massive hit and is now a classic.

Raj Kapoor once wanted to cast her in his film Henna after Hina Durrani, his first choice, declined. Shehnaz Sheikh also turned down the role, leading to Zeba Bakhtiar being cast instead. Henna was a hit and represented India at the Oscars.
