Stan Lee is – along with cartoonists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko – the co-creator of several thousand characters that are the foundation of the Marvel universe. From the 1960s onwards, the success of its series allowed Marvel Comics to rise, over time from a small publishing company to that of a multimedia industrial group. He is also recognized for having helped American comics emancipate themselves from an artistic register originally reserved for a readership for young people, to reach all audiences.
After his departure from Marvel, he created in November 2001 a new studio, named POW! Entertainment. Remained associated with Marvel as a historic symbol of the company, he is credited as executive producer of most audiovisual adaptations of comics featuring his characters.
In the last years of his life, starting in the early 2000s, and primarily after the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s 2009 takeover of Marvel, Stan Lee made appearances in each of the works produced on his characters, with cameos that have become “cult”.
Early Life / Family
Stanley Lieber, born in 1922 in New York, is the son of Romanian immigrants Jews who came to settle in the United States. He grew up in the Washington Heights neighborhood during the Great Depression. From very modest origins, in parallel to his studies at DeWitt Clinton High School, a university in the Bronx, he did odd jobs to help his family.
Stan Lee Wife and Children
He married Joan Clayton Boocock on December 5, 1947. Their daughter Joan Celia “J.C.” Lee was born in 1950. Another daughter, Jan, was born in 1953 and died at three days old. In 1981 the Lees moved to the West Coast. After 69 years of marriage, in July 2017. His wife Joan died of a stroke, at the age of 93.
In a 2010 documentary entirely devoted to him, titled “With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story”, he says: “I never dreamed of doing comics as a child. I wanted to be an actor. My first hero was Errol Flynn”.
Stan Lee had taken the habit of signing his columns in the comics with the expression “Excelsior”, an expression which nobody would know what it means, in order to stand out from his competitors who took up his gimmicks. (“What does ‘Excelsior’ mean? Higher and further to higher glory. That’s what I wish you every time I finish tweeting. Excelsior!”)
Marvel Ambassador
In the 1970s, Stan Lee gradually abandoned screenwriting and editorial management of magazines. Entrusting his characters to a team of young authors that he has trained (Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, Len Wein…), he devotes himself to touring universities or to relations with the press, in order to make the Marvel universe known.
He is also responsible for initiating and supervising several television adaptations of his superheroes, such as the Spider-Man series or The Incredible Hulk. Stan Lee has involved in around fifteen projects for films, cartoons, television series transposing Marvel heroes to the screen, without these projects materializing each time.
Stan Lee Death
Stan Lee dies on November 12, 2018, in Los Angeles at the age of 95, from the heart and respiratory failure. According to the TMZ media site, he also suffered from aspiration pneumonia which the forensic pathologist considered to be a “significant condition contributing to death”.
On the news of his death, the main actors who have interpreted his characters in the cinema pay tribute to him on social networks, saluting the creative genius and the revolutionary screenwriter, in particular the actors Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Jackman, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans or Tom Holland, but also the screenwriter Frank Miller, the actor of the Star Wars saga Mark Hamill, and even the DC Comics editions, eternal rivals of Marvel Comics, which salute in particular a man who “changed the way we see heroes.”
In May of the following year, his private agent, Keya Morgan, is arrested for elder abuse, charged with fraud and robbery during the last years of Stan’s life.
Appearances in works of fiction Marvel
Stan Lee is the executive producer of several films; he took the opportunity to make cameos (flash appearances) in most of the Marvel film adaptations, as well as in television series linked to Marvel superheroes. He appears in all films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and several of the X-Men Cinematic Universe.
